CD/EP REVIEW

"AWEN'S SONG" - KATE BINNINGSLEY

Released: July 2007

Label: Independent (Unsigned)

Reviewer: Harry Rogers

Eva Cassidy, Joni Mitchell, Emmy Lou Harris, Tracy Chapman, the CD/EP "Awen's Song" by Kate Binningsley is evocative of all these great performers. Kate however has her own voice and it shines out on these five songs. Her voice is hauntingly wistful on "The Lament of The Sailor's Wife", sensuous and pulsating on "Beautiful Day", poignantly sad and filled with hope at the same time on the title track "Awen's Song".

"Awen's Song" is delivered with real feeling and repays repeat listening, we all have to carry on with our lives when we lose loved ones and this is a highly personal song which will strongly resonate with everyone who has to confront grief. Outstanding!

"Joni's Emancipation" is a story song which is an homage to Joni Mitchell that takes us on a journey through the never ending search for love ending up by finding it where it had been before.

"Fire" is a love song with a hint of unrequitedness about it, sad but strong.

"The Lament of The Sailor's Wife" is another story about waiting for love to return, giving in to lust and then waiting to spill the beans, in more ways than one.

"Beautiful Day" just brims with the expectation we all feel when we know a new day is gonna be great.

All in all this is a terrific introduction to a singer songwriter of fantastic promise, I await her next recording with high expectations.

Chilled out, sometimes bluesy, sometimes sad, sometimes joyful, acoustic folky, jazzy stuff.
